Shubman Gill | No one has the right to question Statement by former Indian star

Shubman Gill | No one has the right to question Statement by former Indian star

Shubman Gill put in a brilliant performance in the first T20I against Australia on Wednesday. He remained unbeaten on 37 runs off 20 balls, including four fours and a six, at the Manuka Oval in Canberra, Australia. The match was stopped due to rain, but before that, Gill impressed the fans with his impressive batting.

Former Indian batsman Akash Chopra was so impressed with Gul’s batting that he said, “Now no one has the right to question Shubman Gul’s place, because he has performed brilliantly this year.”

Shubman Gill recently came under fire when he was appointed as the vice-captain of the Indian T20 team for the 2025 Asia Cup. His return saw Sanju Samson removed from the opening order, which drew strong reactions from cricket fans and experts.

Gill’s performance in the Asia Cup was average, scoring only 127 runs in 7 matches, at an average of 21.16. Although his form in T20 was not that impressive, he gave strong performances throughout the year in Test and ODI cricket.

Akash Chopra said during a conversation on Star Sports:

"There was never any question about his class, and in my opinion, his form. Yes, there was a bit of talk during the Asia Cup. Sanju Samson was opening, but when Gill was made vice-captain, obviously he would open. That meant Samson, who has scored three centuries, wouldn't get a chance."

He added:

“All these things certainly raise questions, but if you look at the performance of the entire year, no one has the right to point a finger at Shubman Gul. 2025 has been a fantastic year for Gul.”

During the match, India scored 97 runs for the loss of one wicket in 9.4 overs, but rain spoiled the game. The two teams will now play the second T20 match on October 31 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
